Meanwhile, here’s the Frequently Asked Questions:

How does TCM work?

TCM works by bringing the body back into balance with the aid of different treatments like acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion and tuina. The imbalance could be caused by internal (eg. disharmony between organs, emotions, etc ) and external factors (eg. environment, weather, time, etc).

What is the difference between a diagnosis from the tongue and from pulse?

TCM diagnosis requires observing the patient (comprise of tongue reading), taking down details of the medical history records and symptoms, as well as palpation (includes but not limited to pulse taking). Hence, both are needed for an accurate diagnosis.

It is also important for patients to be transparent with his/her medical condition for the physician to make an accurate diagnosis.

What can Acupuncture treat?

Common conditions include musculoskeletal problem, upper respiratory conditions (e.g. cough & cold/flu ), digestive issues (eg. diarrhoea & constipation), women’s and men’s health, neurological condition (eg. stroke, depression, anxiety, facial pain/spasm, headache), skin conditions (eg. Acne, hives, hair loss), eye conditions (e.g. dry eyes, floaters), etc.

What will I feel after an Acupuncture treatment?

Some people may feel a dull ache on the acupoint(s) which will go away after a while.

Body condition and general health will improve. For example, pain relief will be felt for those who come for a pain management treatment.

What are the limits of Acupuncture?

The process of recovery may be slow for certain conditions, so numerous treatments may be needed. It cannot heal fractures or cure diseases like dengue, cancer or other hereditary conditions.

In general, since acupuncture is used to help the body to heal itself, the limits of acupuncture treatments are the limits of what the body can do to heal itself.

How do you decide when to use Acupuncture, Gua Sha, or Tui Na to treat a patient? What is the difference between these treatments?

It depends on the type of condition the patient seek treatment for. The tool and technique used, how the patient feels during the treatment, the effect, as well as the length of treatment is different.

What is herbal medicine and how do they aid in treating an illness?

Herbal medicine can come in the form of herbs (to be boiled), syrup, powder, tablet and/or pills. All contains a combination of herbs. Different formulae are used for different disease pattern and condition. For example, if a patient is diagnosed as blood deficient, he/she will be given herb formulae to nourish the blood.

I take pharmaceutical drugs. Can I still take Chinese herbs?

It is best to take them separately.

Where do your herbs come from?

Most of the herbs in PULSE come from China, Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Does my medical insurance cover Chinese medical treatments?

It depends on your insurance company. Some of them do.

How should I prepare for my first visit and what should I expect?

Every TCM treatment begins with a consultation with our physicians, who will diagnose your condition according to your medical history, pulse and tongue.

If you’re having acupuncture treatment, it will be advisable to wear loose clothing.

      Hello Jace,

TCM will not be able to completely cure Alopecia Areata. However, acupuncture can help reduce the immune reactions that are causing the bald patches, relieve the symptoms and help with maintenance of your condition.

      Hope this helps!

The area that caused most pain / discomfort seems to be the same locations that I had injuries during my schooling days. Also, I had been experiencing more migraine than before lately. I am wondering if acupuncture can assist on these.

Can TCM really treat significant hair loss/thinning and stimulate new hair growth?

    • Physician Joyce Chee

      Hello Bel,

Yes, Acupuncture can help in hair thinning and assist in prevention in future hair loss. This treatment, however, is not for extreme balding cases with little or old hair follicles.

  8. Sharon Chew

I have panic attacks, anxiety and depression. I am thinking if acupuncture helps.
There are times when I feel shortness of breathe, for instance, I am having the symptom for the past 3 weeks.
Western doctors said it is due to anxiety even though I dont feel anxious.
TCM physician told me it could be due to poor stamina and gastric issue.
I have gone through heart scanning and found out I have mild valve mitral prolapse (inherited) which doctor mentioned it is not a serious issue.

I am quite bothered by shortness of breathe as it affects my daily performance.

I have serious sweaty palms and feet (inherited) too. Can acupuncture helps too?

    Sorry for the many question.
    Thank you.

Hey Sharon! No worries, it’s Ask Physician!

Our physicians have read through your concerns and have analysed your condition. The inherited hyperhidrosis (sweaty palms) is an indication of your weak immune (lung) constitution. The shortness of breath is a manifestation of the weaker functioning of the lungs and the heart.

It is advisable to consult our physicians who can suggest a treatment plan for you after a more thorough diagnosis. Do bring along any relevant medical reports with you!

Hi there! Yes, acupuncture can treat dark eye circles. Dark eye circles are caused by “energy blockage” which darkens the area over time. Acupuncture can detoxify and regulate this blockage, lightening the skin under eyes!

  9. Keith

How does the clinic work? If I go for foot reflexology, based on the feedback, would I be referred to Physicians for further acupuncture, etc if needed? Or Foot reflexology is done by separate Masseurs?

Dear Keith, foot reflexology in PULSE is done by therapists. However, if you have pain issues which you would like to treat, we would recommend you to meet with our TCM physicians for a consultation. Hope this clarifies!

  10. Koh

Hi, can acupuncture solved the problem of sebum production/oily T-zone on the face, expression lines and flushing of the cheek (I have this problem for the last 20 years)? How many sessions will I need to go through? Thanks.

      Hello Koh,

Oily skin type and flushing on cheek area can be caused by bodily internal imbalance. In this case, acupuncture can help to restore balance to your body and rebalance your hormonal systems. Besides, it also increases blood circulation to face and stimulates cells to produce collagen. This helps reduce express lines.

The number of sessions differs for every individual. Most patients require at least a course of 10 sessions. Hope this helps!

Hi there! Our physicians will advise on diet, but there is no strict diet to follow. Hope this helps!

Hey Susan! It’s advisable to skip Foot Reflexology during your first trimester.

You may wish to go during your second & third trimester instead. It will even help you to sleep better!
