Hair thinning or loss is a concern to many, whether you are male or female. If you are wondering how to stimulate hair growth naturally, you are not alone.
The volume and quality of hair can mirror your internal health. In TCM, there’s an old saying “发为血之余”. This means that the appearance and quality of the hair can reflect the qi, blood, essence and internal well-being of a person.
COMMON TYPES OF HAIR LOSS
Androgenic Alopecia (Male or Female pattern hair loss) 雄性遗传脱发:
In Men, hair loss usually begins in the temporal area, and the receding hairline eventually forms a characteristic “M” shape. Hair at the crown also thins, often progressing to baldness.
In Females, hair loss usually begins at the crown of the scalp. It produces a gradual/diffuse thinning of the hair and rarely becomes bald. The hairline rarely recedes.
Alopecia Areata (Hair loss in patches) 斑秃:
It is an autoimmune disease whereby the body’s own immune system attacks the hair follicles. It usually presents as patches of hair loss on the scalp. Short broken hair (exclamation mark hair) can also be seen around the margins of the expanding patches.
Telogen effluvium (Acute and chronic) 静止期脱发:
Telogen effluvium is triggered when physiologic stress or hormonal change causes a large number of scalp hair to enter the telogen phase, i.e. sudden increase of shedding of hair at the same time for 2-3 months. Some causes are child birth, high fever, severe infections, major surgery or severe psychological stress.
HOW CAN TCM HELP?
In TCM, we believe that the roles of spleen, liver and kidney of the body are crucial for healthy growth and black hair. The main cause of hair loss is blood deficiency.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
Each visit to our clinic will require approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour of your time. Each session consists of a consultation and acupuncture.
In evaluating one’s cause of hair loss, a physician will ask questions which includes:
- Reasons or triggers for hair loss. For e.g. stress, poor nutrition or after giving birth
- Locations of hair loss. For e.g. overall thinning of hair or mainly at the temporals or at the crown
- Duration of hair loss
- Other accompanying symptoms
Our TCM physicians will diagnose the root cause and contributing factors to your hair loss. Once internal balance is achieved, other issues associated with hair loss such as digestive issues, stress, insomnia, qi or blood deficiency will simultaneously be resolved too.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I VISIT?
It is recommended for you to visit twice a week for acupuncture. If this is not possible, it would be good to come for treatments at least once a week. Our programme consists of 10 treatment sessions. A complimentary bottle of hair tonic (customised for your hair loss type) will be provided.
1st – 10th session – Less shedding is observed.
Depending on the individual’s hair condition, it is advisable to come for treatments twice a week. As this programme introduces micro-trauma to expedite regeneration of hair follicles, long intervals between sessions are discouraged.
11th – 20th session – Sessions can be less intensive, with a frequency of once a week.
It takes around one month for the hair follicle to grow approximately 1cm. Individuals may begin to observe tiny white hairs growing in the hair thinning or alopecia areas. One may notice improvement in the quality of the hair.
20th – 30th session – Frequency of visits can be reduced to once a fortnight.
First Trial at $68.
This 10-session Hair Loss TCM Programme is priced at $880.
